The Northern Abalone is a species of large sea snail, a marine gastropod mollusk in the family Haliotidae, the abalones.

It is endemic to the Pacific coast of North America,

​T​heir Shell size​ range 10-13 cm (4-5 inches) when full-grown

​t​he shells are Oval, with 3-6 tubular projections (perforations) and weirdly designed bumps and thick ridges that

vary in colours of Reddish-brown and/or greenish dark burgundy,

​the inside is a variation of Mostly white with pinkish blue iridescence.

​T​he Abalone can be found in Rocky substrates, moderate exposure, and moderate algal presence; kelp forests are also home to large numbers of Northern Abalone​.

They are Slow-moving and slow-grow​ng. Strict vegetarians, feeding on algae and kelp

​​Currently they are listed as “Endangered”​ and protected by Species at risk Act. SARA.

The most lethal enemy to Northern Abalone, is human beings and over fishing.

External fertilization, with males and females synchronizing the release of gametes, normally between April and June.

Abalone shells are used for jewelry​, the shells have been recently used as spiritual smudge bowls.

Overall, the Northern Abalone is a unique and fascinating species, with a complex relationship with its environment and human activities.
